Pioneer Family Monuments, 1940-1975

After World War II, westerners adapted accepted pioneer tropes and artistic styles to meet the needs of modern life.  Pioneer monuments still featured pioneer mothers, but—mirroring changing American family norms—their focus shifted to emphasize nuclear family units.  Young sons became celebrated as the nation’s hope for the future.
